VISUALIZING Portland’S climate data

City of Portland
Bureau of Planning and Sustainability

Every couple of years, the Bureau reports updates on the region’s climate data. To help make this vast amount of data more palatable for constituents, I veered away from traditional graphics like pie charts, and utilized a colorful palette.

These visualizations were shared with City Commissioners and constituents to announce Portland’s progress toward its Climate Plan goals.

Scope

• Data Visualizations
• Icon Design
• Report Design
• Presentation Design
• Illustration

Challenges

Materials put out by local governmental organizations can be drab and unengaging, which risks a disconnection with the intended audience. How do we best engage constituents without overwhelming them with data, and turning them off entirely?

GOALS

Make the data visually intriguing.

Enable action by affecting legislation.

Educate constituents on the city’s Climate Plan progress.

Actions

I utilized bold colors, carefully crafted icons, hand-drawn illustrations and storytelling throughout to engage and educate constituents and policy makers.

Strategic Report

For any strategic report, it's vital to be relatable and approachable to citizens and constituents.

This report has served as an invaluable tool to inform local legislators and their constituents of the Bureau’s policies and plans.
