when sport fosters hope

Mercy Corps + Nike

Mercy Corps is a global humanitarian organization that helps people affected by crisis, disaster, poverty, and climate change.

Moving Forward was a partner program with Nike that delivered sport kits to areas recently devastated by natural disasters. Whether cricket supplies to India, or soccer gear to South America, sport was seen as a mechanism to reconnect communities, provide moments of joy, and plant seeds of hope for better days ahead.

Challenges

Aid organizations often come and go within crisis areas, further oppressing communities through a “saviorism” model. It was important not to replicate this model, so we engaged people on the ground, within communities, to ensure the success and implementation of these programs.

The first form of aid on the ground isn’t soccer balls – it’s clean drinking water, shelter, food, and access to medical aid.

Actions

Partnering with local community builders, we supplied “pride t-shirts” representative of each country’s flag, as a way to tap into country pride and the energy of national teams. Branded duffels were packed with supplies specific to a region.
